Request for Assistance
in the Formation of Jesuits

To our Friends:

Jesuits in the Philippines are prepared for ministry through a long and rigorous process of formation. This includes two years of novitiate (initial spiritual formation), one or two years of juniorate (studies in languages, history and culture), two years of philosophy, two years of regency (work immersion), four years of theology all prior to ordination when the Jesuit finally becomes a priest. After ordination, there is still another year of tertianship (advanced spiritual formation), and, depending on the personal potentials of the individual, professional preparation towards masters’ or doctoral degrees, often outside of the Philippines.

The costs of formation over so many years are very high. In the Philippines, the formation of a Jesuit costs six thousand dollars a year; when the Jesuit is sent to the US or Europe for further studies, the costs are even higher. Yet, it is only through good and exacting formation that the Jesuit is prepared to work competently in the Lord’s vinyard.

Perhaps, as a friend of the Jesuits in the Philippines, you may wish to underwrite or contribute to the formation of a Jesuit priest. You can do so in any one of the following ways:

  • An outright donation of $72,000 for the full, regular, 12-year formation of one Jesuit in the Philippines.

  • A monthly donation of $500 for twelve years.

  • A perpetual Jesuit Formation Burse of $600,000 to sponsor an indefinite series of Jesuits through their formation in the Philippines.

  • A one-time donation of any amount.

Should you be willing to support the formation of a Jesuit, kindly fill out the enclosed form [or for cyber-letters: kindly click on [[Commitment]] and fill out the form].

Issue your check for the appropriate amount to Philippine Jesuit Foundation and earmark it “Jesuit Priestly Formation”. PJF, a tax-exempt organization, will issue you an official receipt and make sure that the AdNU gets your contribution in full.

Should you have any questions or alternative suggestions for support, please do not hesitate to write or call me.

Sincerely.
